UAE Licence Categories for Refrigerated Vans

A standard UAE light vehicle licence (Category 3) covers vehicles up to 3,500kg gross weight, which includes almost every 1-ton and 1.5-ton chiller van in our fleet. A 3-ton refrigerated truck typically sits just under this threshold too, but always confirm the gross vehicle weight (GVW) on the registration card before assigning a driver.

Anyone driving commercially in the UAE — including moving your own company's goods — needs a valid UAE driving licence in the matching category, or a GCC/international licence that has been converted. Tourist or visitor licences are not valid for commercial cold-chain operations, and rental companies are required to verify this before handover.

Driver Supply, Visa and Labour Considerations

If you choose self-drive, the driver must be your own employee or a properly sponsored staff member — you cannot legally put an unsponsored third party behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle registered to another company without them being listed on your rental agreement as an authorised driver.

Choosing "with driver" removes this entirely from your side. The rental company supplies a UAE-licensed, insured driver under its own labour sponsorship, so there is no visa processing, no payroll, no end-of-service liability and no gap to cover if a staff driver resigns, falls sick or is on leave during a busy period.

Insurance and Liability Differences

With a self-drive rental, your company becomes primarily liable for how the vehicle is used day to day: traffic violations, at-fault accident excess, and any claims arising from driver conduct sit with you, even though the vehicle itself is comprehensively insured by the rental company.

With a driver included, liability for driving conduct largely shifts to the rental company, since their employee is operating the vehicle under their supervision and their own driver-insurance cover. This matters most for businesses without an HR or fleet-safety function to manage driver conduct and incident reporting.

Salik, Fines and Fuel: Who Pays What

On self-drive rentals, Salik toll charges, parking fines and traffic fines incurred during the rental period are the renter's responsibility and are usually billed back with an admin fee if not settled directly. Fuel is always the renter's responsibility on self-drive.

On with-driver rentals, the driver is responsible for obeying traffic rules and typically the rental company absorbs fines caused by their own driver's conduct, though this should always be confirmed in writing. Fuel is commonly still billed to the client unless the contract states a fuel-inclusive rate — check this line item carefully, since it is the most common source of billing disputes.

Cost Comparison: With Driver vs Self-Drive

A professional food-transport certified driver adds roughly AED 200 per day to the base vehicle rate, or a discounted rate on monthly contracts. A second driver for split shifts is around AED 180 per day. Self-drive has no daily driver fee but requires a refundable security deposit of around AED 1,000, which with-driver rentals typically waive.

Once you account for a driver's UAE salary, visa costs, medical insurance, food-handler training and the cost of a backup when they are unavailable, in-house self-drive staffing frequently costs more per delivery day than paying the AED 200/day supplied-driver rate — especially for businesses running fewer than 15-20 delivery days a month.

Food-Handler Training Requirements

Whoever is behind the wheel of a refrigerated van carrying food in the UAE should hold basic food-handler training covering temperature control, cross-contamination and HACCP record-keeping, since Dubai Municipality inspections can question the driver directly during spot checks.

Drivers supplied with a with-driver rental are already food-transport certified as part of the service. On self-drive, your company is responsible for ensuring its own drivers complete this training before they take delivery of the vehicle — factor the cost and time of this into your self-drive decision.

What to Check in the Rental Agreement
